In this special feature, Aslam Bharuchi traces the evolution of Call of Duty, the world’s most successful game series.

The Call of Duty series is the greatest game series of all time. It’s sold 2 million copies per game, more than any other game worldwide. Games in the seriesare so famously addictive that fans often find themselves attached to their sofa for days, stuck their pad, hitting the buttons and analogue sticks without realising how much time has passed.

Call of Duty 1(the beginning)

Call of Duty 1 was the best selling game of 2oo3. It impressed the gaming world with its stunning graphics, and soon became the best selling franchise worldwide.

Call of Duty 2

When Call of Duty 2 was released everybody was waiting for it because they wanted to see how Activison would improve on the first COD release. Weeks went on copies of the game sold fast, and soon it was clear that COD 2 was a massive success; the graphic engine was much better and the new introduced online multiplayer was a big hit. Together these new features created an outstanding game.

Call of Duty 3

The game returned again but not many improvements were made; the same engine was used and the design of the battlefield zone was similar to old versions. While COD 3 was still a great game, fans were waiting for something more spectacular.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

This game was the biggest hit of all time and sold out fast. The new HD engine was realised and gamers worldwide were pleading for the game.  The graphic engine blew people a way with a 1080p software. Another spectacular aspect was that the class set up was changed, with new game perks that allowed the game to flow better. The online gaming was crazy and the new storyline was utterly believable, enabling gamers to connect emotionally with the game.

Call of Duty 5: World at War

This new wasn’t a hit with online gamers:  the graphics had changed from its predecessor game and few people approved. However, what blew people away was the Nazi Zombies game mode, which challenged gamers to try and survive waves of the undead!

Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2

With Modern Warfare 2 the best selling franchise was back. The game left people on the streets at 12.oo in the morning, literally, with thousands queuing to buy the new release. What were they waiting for? New and improved graphics alongside a thrilling storyline.  Gamers were also waiting to see how the online gaming operation had been improved.

The results? The game’s accessibility was greatly enhanced, meaning that the game was much faster and the gameplay more realistic.

Call of Duty 7: Black Ops

Once again everybody was waiting for this game, but at the same time people were baffled that Activison was making the game using the engine that was previously so unpopular. However the game’s creators redeemed themselves by introducing a brand new Nazi Zombies game mode that went down a treat.

Call of Duty 8: Modern Warfare 3

After a long period of time, the new MW3 was out and once again it sold out quickly. The game was improved in many ways: new guns and perks were released, the maps were  awesome and the game introduced a whopping 20 Prestiges, which challenged gamers to reach the top. Activison’s latest Call of Duty game is still being sold in shops; get there quick as they’re going fast!

Great work Aslam, it’s interesting to learn about how the game has developed over the years. Do you think the latest release (MW3) is the best yet?

This review is fantastic. I like the way you set it out in chronological order of the game and talked about the game being the best game out and the improvements. what do you think the best Call of Duty game is out yet?

  4. Felix says:

A good review but COD is the best.

  5. Dylan Owen says:

Try and put more detail into each game review. For inspiration look at the first review of Modern Warfare 3

  6. Aslam says:

I think the best COD game has to be Call Of Duty 4 Modern Warfare.

  7. Chris says:

If you think deep inside the Call of Duty history, it appears that all the ‘modern warfares’ are the best selling.

  8. ejcas says:

A very long history but I believe it is being destroyed due to Activision’s greed of yearly publish and separating work between two companies with contrasting creations. They tried creating elite but since because of Activision’s greed you have to pay.

Aslam this is a very good review but do you think the sides will change when Call Of Duty Black Ops 2 comes out?

  11. Michael says:

I didn’t bother reading this… as I saw the title “Evolution of World’s Best Game Series”. Best-selling… yes, but by NO MEANS the best… not by a long long shot!

  12. Amin says:

    What about Black ops 2?
