Gangsta Rap is a book about three boys who get kicked out of school and do what they do best, which is making music. Their principal and the boys’ mothers’ had all agreed this the boys should focus their energies on making music, as long as they are off the streets.
The boys are only in their early teens, yet they are doing a lot with their lives. They live in a place where there is plenty of crime, but still manage to do what they do best, rap. As the story goes on, they get invited to perform in places across the world and the money begins to roll in. As the boys go on making music, they become well known, and are making good money by performing live for fans. However, all the fame causes a rivalry with people from the other side of town. The three boys begin receiving death threats and Ray, one of the four decides to challenge his aggressors.
Gangsta Rap is a fantastic book that suits young readers from eleven upwards. It’s certainly Benjamin Zephaniah’s finest book and one that entertains and educates at the same time.
