Joseph Delaney’s thrilling series Spooks is packed with adventure. All eight books are tense from start to finish, with danger always lurking around the corner.

Protagonist Tom Ward is a Spooks Apprentice and has been training for five years to become a Spook himself. He faces a lot of dark creatures in his training and at one point must even defeat the Devil himself.

As the series progresses, Tom Ward is revealed to be the best Spook Apprentice there has ever been. Every Spook has to be a Seventh son of a Seventh Son and all are born with gifts, but Tom has greater power than anybody has known, enabling him to defeat various leaders of the dark.

Tom is a very adventurous and curious boy who always gets himself in trouble with the dark. However, he doesn’t always face the dark by himself; his close allies are his Master, known as the Spook of the county, and his best friend Alice. Together, the trio set out to fight evil.

In addition to engaging characterisation, the series explores a variety of themes such as conflict and love. Tom is constantly fighting the dark, striving to make the world a better place for him and the girl he loves, his best friend Alice.

Overall the novels from the Spooks Series never disappoint. Rammed with action and adventure, there’s never a dull moment, and once you start reading, you’re sure to be hooked.
