Saba, the protagonist of Moira Young’s fantastic novel Blood Red Road, is an 18 year old girl who has lived in a place called Silverlake for all her life with her father, twin brother and sister in ‘The Middle of Nowhere’.

One day Saba’s peaceful life is brutally destroyed when her twin brother, Lugh, is kidnapped by the Tonton, the violent security force for the King. The reason for his kidnap is that the King kill a boy born in midwinter every year in order to live.

After the Tonton take Lugh, Saba promises him that she will find him and get him to Crosscreek, where he will be safe. We follow Saba in her dangerous quest to rescue her brother. It’s a great premise for the novel that keeps the reader hooked.

As the tension build throughout the story, Saba realises that she can’t trust anyone, not even the boy who saves her life, Jack. She will need to put her heart’s desire to one side, must race through dust lands and get to Freedom Fields to rescue Lugh, but will she make it there in time?

  1. Miss Thomas says:

Well done Abdulkadir. In the novel do you ever get to discover why the King needs to murder these boys in order to survive?
