Sharp magazine scooped the award for best online publication at the Shine National Media Awards 2012. The prestigious awards ceremony, held on Monday 25 June, was presented by Daily Mail columnist and online editor Simon Heffer and children’s author Keren David.
The magazine, which was started by students from The City Academy, Hackney in October 2011, beat off stiff competition from 170 schools from across the country to win £1000, a Quark license and the opportunity for members of the editorial team to spend a day working with journalists from the Times Educational Supplement.
Sharp‘s deputy editor Connie Hatt said “We are thrilled to have won the award. The editorial team has worked so hard to get the magazine up and running this year, and for that to be recognised in a national competition is incredible.”
Chief judge Simon Heffer praised the standard of entries, suggesting that several were worthy of professional status, and the enthusiasm of those taking part which came through in their work.
